How To Use Essential Oils For Meditation & Yoga
placeholder
Yoga, meditation, and aromatherapy all support the well-being of our body, mind, and spirit. Many yoga instructors add aromatherapy during their classes to uplift their students and promote a more mindful, enlightened experience.

Adriana Chavez, Owner & Yoga Instructor at Every Body Yoga Studio in the San Diego area, started using essential oils when she was 14. “I used them for perfume back then,” she said. “I still use them for perfumes and a whole lot of other stuff, too.”

She uses tea tree oil for her complexion and coconut oil to moisturize. “My grandma always told me to breathe eucalyptus oil when I was a kid to help clear my lungs and nose.”

Years later, as a yoga instructor, Adriana loves using lavender for relaxing classes, as well as several other oils.
“I have an oil diffuser that I use. I love the smell of oils in my classes because they often bring positive feelings and memories to mind. I use lavender to relax for deep stretching classes and meditation classes... I use lemon for early morning invigorating yoga classes for cardio and strengthening.”
Essential oils can be used by mixing several drops of essential oil with water in a diffuser or spray bottle, or by mixing with carrier oil and anointing students (with permission) —the forehead or one of the chakras are good for anointing. Undiluted oils on the skin can cause an allergic reaction. It’s also a good idea to check with class member before using oils, as some may be sensitive to fragrances.

Cleanse and purify your yoga classroom, as well as your yoga mat and clothes with essential oils. Different fragrances offer various benefits. They promote emotional and mental wellness, adding to the sense of well-being, both physical and spiritual. They can be used for a number of reasons, such as boosting immunity and even helping to manage weight and diet.

In a classroom setting, experiment. What one student finds uplifting may do just the opposite for someone else. Always use high-quality oils like the ones offered at vitalityextracts.com .  Some of the popular oils used during yoga include:

Lavender: Decreases stress and anxiety; aids in healing burns and wounds, slows the aging process with its powerful antioxidants, improves sleep, psoriasis and eczema, and can ease headaches
Frankincense: Grounding, balancing, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, acts as an astringent—tightens the skin, promoting a youthful appearance, boosts cellular regeneration, strengthens the immune system, and stimulates the lymphatic system
Eucalyptus: Anti-inflammatory, decongestant, disinfectant, antiseptic, and bug repellent
Myrrh: Supports the immune system and is known for its anti-infectious and antiviral properties
To get started using essential oils in your yoga practice myrrh or frankincense for centering and strengthening. Peppermint, myrrh, eucalyptus, and frankincense are a few fragrances to become more aware of the breath. Lavender’s great for calming and sore muscles, and lemon, orange, or grapefruit for cleansing and purifying.

During meditation, relaxing the body and mind can be a bit of a challenge. Essential oils can make a big difference, enhancing your meditation and giving you more clarity and peace of mind. Use the oils in a diffuser or mix with carrier oil and apply on your skin. The soothing fragrance of aromatherapy helps de-stress, relax, and focus on your breathing.

Through grounding and cleansing, frankincense can assist you in connecting with your spiritual self. It’s also beneficial in helping to stabilize your root chakra and letting your energy flow through your chakras.

The calming effects of lavender help relax the mind, offering more clarity and focus during meditation. Since eucalyptus is good for your breathing, it’s a great addition to meditation so you can breathe more deeply, especially if you are experiencing any type of congestion.

Using the same methods mentioned for yoga, try different essential oils during your meditation and see which ones promote a more mindful, enlightened experience for you.
