When I started my new job last August, my already long commute nearly doubled. It was a frustrating inconvenience, but at the time I believed that it would be worth it. The job was better and the money was better, but over the next couple of months, the 1 hour and 15 minute commute started to take a noticeable toll on my health.
I started experiencing headaches, trouble sleeping, muscle and joint pain - and worst of all, my mood and mental state was at an all time low. That’s when I ran into some startling research about just how bad a long commute can be on an individual.
In fact, leading psychologists around the world concluded that the heightened stress that commuting puts on individuals and their families can easily overshadow the benefits.
Commuting exacts considerable stress on the human mind and body and on family relationships (just ask my husband). All the stressors, day in and day out, take their toll. Each added travel minute correlates with an increase in troubling health problems including, but not limited to:
- joint disease
- mental illness
- depression & anxiety
- higher rates of infection
- sleep deprivation
Learning all of this startling information had me on the edge of quitting my job. After all, I've always listened to my body and believed that my health is more important than any amount of money a job could provide. But luckily a co-worker with a similarly long commute showed me a product that has since changed my life (and my commute) for the better, and turned my hellish commute into a pleasant, relaxing experience that boosts my mood & has me feeling reinvigorated.
